Do I need to be a certified massage therapist to practice massage therapy?

What Certification Do I Need to be a Massage Therapist?

In 33 states, you must take and pass a massage therapist exam to legally practice massage therapy. Even if you live in a state that does not require you be a certified massage therapist to practice, certification is still important. The National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCBTMB) is the overseeing organization that offers exams for certification.

NCBTMB certification is important to becoming a successful certified massage therapist. The credentials offered by the NCBTMB certification are imperative, even where not required by law, as they help to solidify your massage therapy career and establish you as a professional with dedication, knowledge, and clinical skills that pass the high standards of excellence set by the NCBTMB.

NCMTMB certification requires at least 500 hours of instruction through massage therapist colleges, although some states require as much as 1500 hours. The exam is based on theoretical and action-oriented mastery in core skills, capabilities, and knowledge, encompassing both active skill testing and written exams. You can find out more about receiving an education from massage therapy colleges that prepares you for the NCMTMB exam at the Cortiva Institute, www.cortiva.com.
